Always the Bridesmaid and never the Bride…or Groom in this case

“I’m still going to go big brother on your ass if you so much as make Katara cry.” Sokka growled out at a Toph that was now eye level to him.

“Oh I’m so scared, are you going to talk me to death.” Toph asked sarcastically while rolling her eyes.

“I mean it Toph!” Sokka frowned and gave Toph a light punch to the shoulder, “Watch out for my little sister alright?”

The earth bender sensing the change in mood, nodded solemnly. “You know I would risk my life for Katara.”

“Well I’ll have none of that.”

Both the bride and the bridesmaid looked towards an elegantly dressed Katara who was at the moment leaning at the entrance to the kitchen.

“Hey Sugar Queen,” Toph said softly, “We were just about to head down, why don’t you go down and entertain the guest for now?” Knowing that Sokka was standing behind her, Toph gave Katara a pout.

Which of course did the desired affect on her wife. Katara nodded and smiled as she remembered the first time she had commented on how Toph, the most powerful earth bender and metal bender would sometimes pout when she didn’t get her way. Toph unsurprisingly tried to dignified her pout as a frown which got Katara laughing all the harder, in the end Toph decided to just pout at Katara whenever she wanted to get her way.

But only when no one else would see.

Toph felt giddy at the thought, Katara was hers. Finally, after so much time, so much pain and a hell lot of running away. The surprisingly strong water bender was her wife.

“You have that love struck grin on your face again.” Sokka commented and earned a smack in the arm. “Oww, if it wasn’t for the fact that I don’t want Katara to be spending her honeymoon with someone with a black eye, I would so give you a punch...”

Toph laughed, it was so easy to fall back into friendly teasing with Sokka, “Well if I didn’t want Suki to be a widower I would have earth bended you all the way into the ground.”

“Suki…” Sokka sighed out, “You know she doesn’t want to see me anymore.”

“That’s a lie and you know it, you just have to go and tell her the truth.”

“That’s the problem, I don’t know the truth,” Sokka pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration, he seem to be doing that a lot lately. “I can’t tell her that I…feel for her, not after what I did.”

“You were only trying to protect her,” Toph tried to reassure her brother-in-law with a pat on the shoulder.

“Guys seriously, you have to come and entertain the guest!” The best man shouted from the hallway.

“We’re coming Aang,” Toph gave a little tug to Sokka and started for the door, “Wouldn’t want to keep the guest waiting now do we?”

Sokka dipped his head in agreement and started to follow Toph.

“Anyways, I think this is the first time a bridesmaid isn’t wearing a dress.” Toph snickered and broke into a run.

“DO NOT, make me threaten you again!”

Honestly it wasn’t Sokka’s fault that Toph choose Aang as her best man. Katara logically decided to choose Sokka as her best man but since Katara was the more feminine (at least according to Toph’s parents) of the duo, the parents had strictly order Katara to at least call Sokka a bridesmaid.

Like they had sighed out, “This wedding is already untraditional, lets keep some things the same.” Sokka didn’t go down with out a fight; it took Toph earth bending him up to the neck in mud till Sokka agree to be officially titled as bridesmaid.

Sokka mumbled after Toph, “Well at least Katara looks happy.”

Katara was leaning up to place a kiss on Toph’s lips, causing the taller bender to blush slightly. The crowd around them cheered and mugs were clunk together. Aang who was standing next to Sokka nodded his head in agreement, “Too bad you’re stuck being the best man instead of the groom.”

“Not you too!” Sokka sighed, “I promise I’ll go talk to Suki…eventually.”

“Well you better not wait too long, or you’re going to once again become the bridesmaid.” Aang replied, “I’m going to marry Zuko next month and guess who I want for my…”

-One month later-

“There were witnesses that claimed a roar erupted somewhere near the buffet tables, the great Avatar Aang was thrown out a window and was never seen again.”

“Sokka!” Suki admonished, “That’s not what happen at all!”

Guest at the Fire Lord’s unofficially official wedding murmured in agreement. If Aang were dead, why would there even be a wedding ceremony. Sokka who was only moments ago standing on top of a chair expertly telling a fishermen’s tale was now being held by the ear and led to a corner by Suki.

“Serves him right.” Toph said, “Just cause he’s mad at not being able to be the best man…again.”

Katara chuckled at her brother and Suki’s antics. It was true that right now Sokka was being lectured into the ground, but at least everything had been smoothed over.

-After the Wedding Ceremony-

Katara had led Toph to the Palace garden and had asked her spouse to sit down.

“Toph,” The water bender reach up and tilted Toph to face her. “You’ve known I’ve always wanted children.”

Toph gulped, “Well yeah, we were going to adopt right?” She always knew Katara wanted kids; they had talked about it earlier, but why bring it up now?

Katara took Toph’s hand and place it on her stomach. The earth bender gave Katara a confused look.

Smile encouragingly Katara asked her wife to listen for a very small and new heart beat.

-Reception Hall-

A shout could be heard “SHE DID WHAT?!”

“Seems Katara finally told Toph what Kyoshi gave them.” Zuko commented dryly after he bid another family general good bye.

“It was rather sweet of her wasn’t it?” Aang smiled up at his husband, this was a Zuko cuddle moment if any, though the Fire Lord acted rather cold to the great news, Aang could see the sparkle in Zuko eyes that spoke what joy he held for his friends.

“Zuko, you know both I and Tylee want kids too, right?” Aang said while sipping a cup of tea, “You’re going to have to sleep with Mai tonight.”

The Fire Lord’s scream was accomanied by Aang’s bride maid’s yell of surprise. For at the very same second, Suki had told Sokka that she was indeed very much so pregnant.
